Depression
Rock Bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.
— J.K. Rowling
Depression affects how you feel, think, and act.
It’s not the same thing as sadness, and it can be hurtful when those around you "don’t get it."
Do people really think it’s as easy as "Buck up! Up and at ‘em! Just do it!"? I mean, if that worked, you’d have done it already.
When those who don’t get it imply that you’re just being lazy… or want attention… that usually makes you feel even worse.
Sometimes what feels like outside judgment is actually ignorance… but it nonetheless leads to shame and guilt that exacerbates your depression and decimates your self-esteem.
I get it… and I know depression is real.
Whether due to a relationship conflict, career indecision, aching loneliness, role transition, caretaker burnout, lack of meaning and purpose, or sheer un-nameable loss of interest in life…
Depression is a real beast. Like a wooly mammoth sitting on your chest so even the thought of taking a shower is daunting.
Depression is the opposite of rose-colored glasses.
Depression can turn beautiful things ugly, distort your self-image, and hijack your thoughts so they are negative, shaming, and utterly cruel.
We can work together to craft a more positive, accurate lens through which you can view your life, your thoughts, and your emotions. I will help you rediscover your innate strengths so you can draw on them more readily when that wooly mammoth takes up residence on your chest.
Getting up… getting help…
I understand that when even the thought of getting out of bed or taking a shower is overwhelming, it’s hard to find the motivation to seek therapy.
Or maybe you’re just so busy with work, family, and life that you think you can’t take the time for therapy.
Especially when… GASP… that time is for you personally.
Do you confuse "Self-Care" with "Self-Ish"?
If so, you are not alone – and I am here to assure you that therapy is self-care and far from selfish. And when you care for yourself, there is more of you to go around for others.
When you know it’s time…
When your usual ways of solving things don’t work… when doing nothing becomes more painful than the emotional risk of asking for help… that’s when you know it’s time.
Talking helps.
Let’s work together to put you back on course and living life without depression.
