I know when I go to a blog  I am always interested in learning a little bit about who's writing and about their lives in addition to learning about what they do and how they work. So – I am a mental health therapist with a diverse background. I received my bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Cornell University, received my theatre training at the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard, and got my master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from The College at Brockport. I also love painting and drawing – my mother (also an artist) was my first and most influential teacher. I am also trained and certified as a yoga teacher.

All of these interests impact the way I work – creativity, expression, imagination – what could be more creative than waking up each day and choosing how you will craft your own life?

My first counseling job was at a community mental health clinic. I loved the experience, and I wouldn’t change it for the world – but being in private practice is a dream come true.

My father was a psychologist, a wise and gentle man who touched many lives. Even today, 30 years after he passed away, he is remembered and cherished by those who knew him, clients as well as friends and loved ones. I never tire of hearing stories about him. He had a special way of connecting with people. Remind me to tell you about the time he brought donuts to his car mechanic early one morning and left them by the door as a surprise. By the time Butch came to open up his shop an army of ants had already found the donuts and were feasting. Last week – more than 30 years after the fact – I stopped at Butch’s service station to get my tires checked – when I introduced myself as Mark Lewin’s daughter Butch got a bit emotional and retold the “Famous Box of Donuts” story. (I got a little emotional, too.)

Dad had one of the first private practices in Rochester, Upstate Psychological Service Center. When I was a senior high school I worked at his office, I remember typing up addresses on rolodex cards! If you don’t know what I am talking about – Google it!

So from the very start I was primed for a career as a therapist – I just didn’t know it! But I have no doubt that all the things I did before I hung a shingle as a therapist enrich my work.

Stay tuned for more!
